The project

Personal finance apps can tell you how much you spent on groceries. None of them tells you how much of your wealth is actually yours once tax is paid. WealthWatcher starts there: the large number at the top of the dashboard is not the gross portfolio value, it is the real net figure, with the latent tax you would owe if you sold today already subtracted.

The tax engine covers substitute tax on capital gains, including the blended rate for mixed-composition ETFs, stamp duty on securities accounts, IVAFE on foreign holdings and the reporting obligations that come with them. Positions are derived from transactions rather than entered by hand: lots, average cost basis and carried-forward losses are all recomputed from the operation history.

Around that core sit bank transaction reconciliation with automatic categorisation by merchant and MCC, French-method mortgage amortisation schedules, envelope-style savings goals, monthly budgets, and a calendar that warns when upcoming outflows will exceed available cash.

The Markets page pulls thirteen indicators from public sources — Yahoo Finance, the ECB data portal, CoinGecko — and turns them into a per-sector context reading, always citing sources and stating plainly that this is information, not advice.

It runs on SQLite in a single container: no mandatory external services, and the data stays on the host machine. Secrets in the database are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a dedicated key, kept separate from the session key, so rotating one does not make the other unreadable.
